AS SOME OF YOU SLOPE SOARING ENTHUSIASTS may have guessed I have a liking for unusual or out of the rut models to fly. Having already built and flown a Rivington Hawk and an own design Hunter (featured Oct 1984 RM) which were very successful I looked around for something else that was different and decided that the Voodoo would be rather a challenge.
I should like to tell you just a few facts about the full-size plane first. Originally intended for service with fighter squadrons of the strategic air command, the F-101 Voodoo went on to serve with most USAF combat commands and performed reliably in a wide variety of roles including penetration/escort, tactical/nuclear strike, interception, reconnaissance and conversion training. It can be regarded as one of the most versatile supersonic aircraft yet to be designed.
For its manufacturer it marked an important turning point as it was its first aircraft to be accepted for production by the USAF. Voodoos captured the world speed record and established low maintenance and high safety records, powered by two J57 Pratt and Whitney turbojets with 16,900 lb each maximum thrust with after burning maximum speed 1220 mph.
Now onto the model. Though I hasten to add, for the experienced pilot only, hence the brief building instructions.
Fuselage: Cut two fuselage sides from medium 5mm sheet and glue triangular strip to the edges and hold in place with pins until set, one left side, one right side. Next cut out all formers and drill necessary holes.
Now glue formers F3 and P4 in place making sure they are square, then add other fuselage side and leave to dry, when set glue formers F1 and F2 in place and clamp together until set. Taper rear end of triangular strip so that when pulled together they meet nicely and can be glued. You can then add top and bottom 10 mm sheet along with F6 and F7 make up nose block and fit. next plane and sand fuselage to shape.
Build frame of fin and sheet one side only, at this stage fit elevator cable and hold in place with Evo-Stik then add other side sheeting, when dry add 6mm sheet leading edge and tip and trailing edge stock.
Cut slots in top of fuselage to accept 4mm ply spar and leading edge of fin, and drill hole for elevator cable, now glue fin in place making sure it is square, then add 3mm sheet to bottom of fuselage rear and both F5s leaving enough clearance between for the ply exhaust outlets as at cross section 'X'.
Now is the time to shape some block for the dummy engines and glue them in place on the fuselage sides. I omitted the intakes as I thought these would create unnecessary drag..."
